Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is classic comfort food at its finest—tender, juicy hamburger steaks baked in a rich, creamy onion gravy until perfectly savory and satisfying. Inspired by traditional Pennsylvania Dutch cooking, this dish is simple, hearty, and made with everyday pantry staples. Serve it with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or crusty bread to soak up every drop of that delicious gravy.
2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
½ cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
1 egg, beaten
1 onion, finely diced
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
1 cup heavy cream
1 onion, sliced
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Make the patties
In a large bowl, gently mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper until just combined. Do not overmix.
Form steaks
Shape mixture into 6–8 oval patties. Set aside.
Brown the patties
Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Brown patties for 3–4 minutes per side until golden. Remove and set aside.
Start the gravy
In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until softened. Sprinkle in flour and stir for 2 minutes.
Build the sauce
Slowly whisk in beef broth and heavy cream. Add garlic powder and whisk until smooth and thickened.
Bake
Nestle browned patties into the gravy. Cover tightly and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.
Rest and serve
Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy, flavorful steaks.
Avoid overmixing the meat to keep patties tender.
If gravy thickens too much, stir in a splash of beef broth.
Add sliced mushrooms for extra depth of flavor.
Finish with fresh parsley for a pop of color.
