Everyone loves fried chicken, but not everyone loves deep frying. This Air Fryer Fried Chicken gives you the same crispy, golden-brown coating with much less oil. The chicken is juicy on the inside, flavorful, and perfectly crisp on the outside. It’s an easy and healthier way to enjoy classic American fried chicken at home.
1 whole chicken, cut up
or an assortment of chicken thighs and drumsticks
2 cups buttermilk
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
2–3 tablespoons Buffalo hot sauce (optional)
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon white pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk, salt, black pepper, and hot sauce (if using).
Add the chicken pieces, cover, and refrigerate for 3–4 hours.
Spray the air fryer basket with olive oil spray.
In a large zip-top bag, combine all the flour mixture ingredients. Shake well.
Remove chicken from the marinade, letting excess drip off.
Place chicken into the bag and shake until fully coated.
Arrange chicken in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Do not overcrowd.
Lightly spray the chicken with olive oil spray.
Air fry at 390°F (200°C) for 25 minutes, flipping halfway and spraying again with oil.
Check that the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
Serve hot and enjoy!
Don’t overcrowd the basket: Cook in batches if needed for extra crispiness.
Cornstarch is key: It helps create a crunchier coating.
Use oil spray, not liquid oil: This keeps the coating light and crispy.
Let chicken rest 3–5 minutes before serving so the juices settle.
