3 Ingredient Sugar Cookies Recipe

These 3 Ingredient Sugar Cookies are as simple as baking gets — just butter, sugar, and flour! They come out soft and tender in the center with lightly crisp edges, plus a sparkling sugar coating for extra crunch. They’re egg-free, quick to make, and perfect for holidays, parties, or a last-minute sweet treat. Add sprinkles or icing to dress them up for any special occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened but still cool

  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar, divided

    • ¾ cup (150 g) for dough + ¼ cup (50 g) for rolling

  • 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Prep
Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

  • Cream Butter & Sugar
In a mixing bowl, beat butter and ¾ cup sugar on medium speed for 3–4 minutes, until light and fluffy.

  • Add Flour
Mix in the flour on low speed until a dough forms.

    • Dough should be tacky but not overly sticky.

    • If too dry, add 1 tbsp milk OR if too sticky, add 1 tbsp flour at a time (up to ¼ cup).

  • Shape Dough
Scoop dough using a 1 tbsp scoop and roll into smooth balls.

  • Coat in Sugar
Roll each dough ball in the remaining ¼ cup sugar.
Place on lined baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
Optional: Top with sprinkles for a festive look!

  • Bake
Bake 12–14 minutes, until edges are set and just turning golden.

  • Cool
Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 10–15 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.

Notes

  • Do not overbake — centers should stay soft.

  • Best sprinkles to bake with: jimmies — nonpareils may bleed color.

  • For extra smooth cookie tops, lightly press dough balls before baking.
